What’s Hot: Our 2019 Wellness Predictions

Yoga
Barre
Meditation
Nutrition

Are you ready to redefine your wellness routine in 2019? From B12 injections to personalized astrology and minimalist manicures, here’s what we’re talking about—and what we think will be BIG—when it comes to your well-being this new year.

#1: All the wellness options, in one place.

wellness shop trend 2019

Meet modern self-care.
Life moves fast (and 2019 isn’t about to slow down). So why should running from one wellness appointment to the next stress us out? This is the year when one-stop wellness shops start popping up everywhere. With super cool vibes and top-of-the-line treatments, businesses like Chillhouse in NYC make it their mission to serve up the best services that fit your busy scheduleall under one roof. Plus you can plug your laptop in!

#2: Upgrade your yoga flow.

yoga wellness trend

Your practice is evolving.
The intentions you set and the way you flow can influence both your mind and mood—on and off the mat. In 2019, we are elevating our practice thanks to studios who are putting a new spin on an old routine. Think Downward-Facing Dog to beats by Drake or Chaturanga in cold yoga. This year, it’s all about making your yoga flow unforgettable… and fun! NY-based studio Y7 has created a cult following doing just that. With heated hip-hop, beat bumping, and candlelit yoga classes, it’s safe to say we can’t get enough of studios like Y7.

#3: Collagen is *extra* cool.

collagen benefits

Getting your glow on is becoming a No. 1 priority.
Fill up your cup, because we are all about drinking collagen in 2019. With benefits that include healthier skin, hair, and nails, brands like Further Food and Vital Proteins are making it easy to add collagen and collagen peptides to everything—from your coffee to your post-workout smoothies. Plus, there’s no “yuck” factor.

"Collagen is one of the few supplements I take without fail every single day. Not only does it give me a protein boost, but it keeps my hair and nails healthy and makes my skin glow!" — Carissa Stanton [@broccyourbody] | Health, Fitness, Nutrition Guru

#4: Minimalist manicure vibes.

minimalist manicure nails

Show your nails you know what’s up.
While we are big fans of an extra glam mani, 2019 is proving to be all about the “less is more” theory. This new year, the key to stepping up your nail art is keeping it simple with negative space. It’s not a revolutionary idea, but we are loving the trend that features more nude and neutral colors with some killer designs. At our next appointment, it’s all about getting a little less crazy with the nail polish color and a little more adventurous with our designs. Our favorite for 2019? A clear polish with metallic lines, colored tips, words, or bold (glittery) texture. Nailed it.

#5: Make room for the men—in class.

barre fitness men

Who said barre and Pilates are just for the ladies?
“Meet me at the ‘barre’” isn’t just a girls-only invite anymore. This new year, let’s hear it for the boys joining us for muscle-burning, low impact exercises classes. While many barre and Pilates classes normally seem to attract more females, men are starting to tap into the benefits—like improved balance—to support their traditional workout routine.

“Within the last eight months, I have enjoyed seeing more men experience the benefits of barre.  Barre3 is a full-body balanced workout combining strength conditioning, cardio, and mindfulness, which is something so important for us all to embrace, not just women, and I have noticed more men are slowly discovering that, and are allowing themselves to become more balanced and empowered from within.” — Dustin Isom [@dustisom] | Barre3 Instructor

#6: Let’s hear it for the “healthy” fats!

healthy fats keto

Keto is making high-fat foods a popular conversation.
From celebrities to athletes (even your coworker), the Ketogenic Diet became the food-worthy buzzword in 2018. Based on your body going into a state of ketosis—where you burn fat instead of carbs for fuel—this high-fat, low-carb diet brought “healthy” fats to the forefront. From snacking on avocados to adding MCT oil your coffee, a better understanding of high-fat foods (and adding them to your meal plan) is all the rage this new year.

“It’s exciting to hear talk about healthy fats since they are such an important part of our everyday diets and overall wellbeing. It’s also important to note that all fats aren’t created equal, trans fats, for example, raise our bad cholesterol levels and can damage or clog our arteries, and are best to be avoided. Avocados (no surprise) are one of my favorite healthy fats. One reason healthy fats are important is the high amount of omegas they encompass to support our nervous system and brain health, and the fact that healthy fats enable the absorption of certain vitamins into our bodies!” — Erica Fowler [@ericajanehealth] | Holistic Health Coach

#7: A better understanding of beauty products.

clean natural beauty products

Do you *really* know what you’re using?
What is “clean beauty” and what does it mean? In 2019, we are taking a better look at our beauty products and what we put on our bodies and faces. With big brands like Goop recently saying “no” to chemicals, U.S. beauty standards are now becoming a bigger part of the conversation for all levels of products, from the drug store to Sephora. Having a better understanding of where what we use comes from, what it contains, and how it is created and tested is a New Year’s resolution we are staying sustainably serious about.

#8: The galaxy will guide your journey.

astrology sign trend

Get ready to empower your mind, body, and soul.
Will Mercury Retrograde really effect my next workout? How does the moon or sun influence my astrology sign (and my emotions)? No more newspaper horoscopes here! This year, we are taking a deeper look at understanding ourselves through personalized astrology. Accessible astrologers and apps, like Co-Star, offer hyper-personalized horoscopes and birth chart readings. I mean, who doesn’t want a deeper understanding of themselves as we embark on a new year?

“A personal astrology reading provides a deep understanding of your life's journey. Each planetary placement in your birth chart (sign and house) and the aspects formed between them, create a unique signature that details your personality traits, relationships, and experiences. After a reading, you will have a greater awareness of self so that you may consciously navigate life with a sense of ease and empowerment.”  Ashley Tracey [@ashleytracey_soul_centered] | Soul-Centered Astrologer

#9: Instant Infusion: IV drips + vitamin shots.

b12 shots wellness benefits

Vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, oh my!
Getting all the good things into your body fast is becoming a thing. From B12 shots to enhance your energy levels to IV infusions that can boost your immune system (or cure a hangover), this go-to form of wellness is a *must* for our 2019 routine.

"I am always excited to test and experiment with new wellness offerings and Denver has so many to offer. My recent visit to the Hydrate IV Bar for the major boost of the Myers Cocktail Drip was amazing. You sit in a huge lounge chair, they hook you up to an IV, offer tea and water and you get hydrated and vitamins intravenously within the hour. Add a B12 shot for a mood boost and I took my wellness to the next level that day! Highly recommend it!” — Jacki Carr [@jackicarr] | Goal Coach + Co-Founder of Rock Your Bliss

#10: The power of positivity.

body positivity

This is the year of body-inclusivity and self-love.
We are all about self-love and body-inclusivity, and in 2019 we are celebrating this movement with gear that *actually* fits our needs… and curves! Fitness brands like Beyond Yoga and Superhero Fit are creating athletic clothing that truly works for everybody, at every fitness level. Accepting and loving our bodies is putting an exclamation point on positivity as we embark on a new year.

“The way we feel about our bodies, move our bodies, and talk about our bodies is such a part of our wellness journey. In the wellness industry, we can bring in the new year with more positivity on not only our bodies, but our whole selves!“ — Shanna Tyler [@shannatyler] | Entrepreneur | NYC Girlboss

#11: Not your average dance class.

dance class fitness

Studios are bringing some serious, sweat-worthy swagger.
Sweating it out in the form of dance is at the top of our to-do list in 2019. With studios of all sizes turning up the bass and making their spaces extra Insta-worthy, they are doubling down on eclectic classes for all fitness levels—and even getting celebrity investors. Learn to shake it while making cardio-pumping, endorphin-boosting moves!

"I've fallen in love with dance fitness classes like 305 Fitness because I always leave dripping in sweat but with a huge smile on my face! Most other workouts—and even yoga practice—can be so serious, it's nice to change it up with cardio dance to let loose and have fun!" — Melanie Torres [@headstandsandheels] | Wellness Blogger

#12: Giving back to your body—and Mother Earth.

Après

We’re focusing on feel-good basics and keeping it clean.
Simplicity is the name of the game as we head into the new year, and it’s quickly becoming an essential part of our wellness routine. Whether we are sipping on clean, plant-based protein from Après post-workout or sporting sustainable leggings made out of recycled water bottles from the Girlfriend Collective, doing our body and Mother Earth good is our mantra for 2019.

We're big fans of plant-based protein over here at Après! Plant-protein is phenomenal for your body because it packs added vitamins and minerals (think glowy skin, stronger bones, and less inflammation) and is much easier on your stomach than your traditional whey protein. Aside from being great for your body, plant protein is also much better for the environment.” — Darby Jackson [@drinkapres] | Co-founder, Après

#13: Mainstream meditation.

meditation benefits

It’s all about finding time to reflect and reset.
Making meditation part of our daily grind is essential. With the recent growth of meditation apps—like Simple Habit and Calm—and MINDBODY wellness studios featuring more sound baths and silent practices, the ancient art of meditation is now more accessible than ever. Whether it’s chasing your career goals or finding a few minutes to yourself after a crazy day, cultivating peace and calm is top of mind when it comes to every element of success … and we are all about making mindfulness a priority in 2019. Cheers to personal zen zones!

4 Yoga Poses for a Better Night’s Sleep

Yoga
Personal Growth
Expert Advice

We’ve all had sleepless nights. It’s the worst! Watching the wee hours of morning tick away. Wishing we could slip into a restful sleep before our alarm goes off . The frustrating feeling of knowing exactly how many minutes there are before you need to be up. Then, struggling through a heavy relentless morning filled with self-medicating coffee runs, and a tired, snappy version of yourself dragging through the day.

There’s no one miracle cure for insomnia because there are so many reasons for not being able to sleep. Many people, however, find relief by curbing stress right before bed. One way to do that is with a few choice yoga stretches that mellow you out by encouraging your Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) to ignite your bodies “rest and digest” cycles. This is the opposite of the “fight or flight” system that helps you race away from oncoming tigers, or other more urban “dangers.”

Here are a few shapes that calm the nervous system and decrease adrenaline in the body to help you rest and ultimately sleep better.

Legs-Up-the-Wall

This is a super simple way to relax right before bed, or even from the comfort of your bed. Pushing your legs up the wall helps move the lymph and blood out of your feet using gravity, this, in turn, means your heart doesn’t need to work as hard to pump it back up. Thus, things get a little quieter in your cardiovascular system helping to soothe your body into a sense of softness.

Supported Bridge (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana)

This shape uses the same idea as Legs-Up-the-Wall. It calms by inverting your hips above your heart, but it also stretches your neck and chest open for tension relief. The muscles can open and let go of anything they are holding onto. It also opens your lungs and diaphragm, which allows you to breathe more deeply, and that oxygen is a calmant.

Child’s Pose (Balasana)

Folding forward in Child’s Pose works a little differently. It still opens the lungs (from the upper back), but it requires you to turn inwards. You could bring your hands by your sides for a more restorative version of the shape, and resting your head to one side or the other is often more comfortable. Alternatively, try resting your forehead on a block or the floor, and use that surface to massage the space between your eyebrows. This triggers an acupressure point between your eyebrows that stimulates the pineal gland to encourage a melatonin response. Melatonin is the hormone our bodies produce when it gets dark that tells us to go to sleep!

Reclined Bound Angle (Supta Baddha Konasana)

Use a couple pillows for this one! Pop one under your knees, one under your head or upper back, along your spine, and under your hands. Then, get ready to  fall asleep there. Let everything get heavy and drippy and start to think about that weighted sensation in your feet, slowly bring your attention up your body making each body part heavier and heavier as you go. This is a version of Yoga Nidra Meditation and it is extremely relaxing—but you must go slowly.

So, there you have it! A few ideas from yoga, science, and acupressure to help you get some much-deserved ZZZ’s.
