A lifelong migraine sufferer, Emilie Hoyt—founder and president of LATHER—has created a booming business by transforming her sensitivities into natural products people can actually use. Using her experience to help others, Hoyt turned an interest in organic ingredients and aromatherapy into an authentic commitment to serve up wellness that works.

We sat down with Emilie to chat about how she’s grown a clean beauty business, what it takes to stick out in the beauty industry, and how to find balance as a working mom!

Q: We love wellness, but what motivated you to step away from your PR career to pursue founding LATHER?

While I felt my PR work in the nonprofit sector was fulfilling, I wanted to use the skills I learned for a cause I really felt passionate about.

Q: Were you always confident in your decision to start a wellness business? What has kept you going?

I haven’t always felt confident in my business skills; however, I have always felt confident in my products and my ability to understand how to convey the unique aspects of LATHER.

Q: You created LATHER out of your deep-rooted passion for natural products that make a difference. What separates your company from the mainstream?

It was not mainstream to be talking about natural beauty 20 years ago. I am so pleased that there is a great amount of momentum gaining in this area, however, it still comprises only about 7% of the global beauty business. While LATHER has always focused on incorporating the best natural ingredients possible, we specialize in bringing unique ingredients to the marketplace. Our products are the opposite of bland and create an instant engagement of the senses. We focus on making sure that whether it’s a shampoo, face cream, or body soap, our products not only do what they promise, they make the user feel better after they use them.

Q: What’s your favorite LATHER item?

I would say my favorite product is the Chia Seed & Passion Fruit Cleansing Oil. It cleanses and works as a moisturizer!

Q: Not only do you run a successful company but you have a family, fulltime. What can you say to all the mommas out there when it comes to finding “balance” between work, kids, and self-care—especially when it comes to your fitness and wellness routine?

Put your oxygen mask on first. Whether it’s sleep, nutrition or exercise, what I’ve learned is that things can go south rather quickly.  Another thing I have learned is “wellness retreats” are available to everyone. You don’t need to save up; you can reset by taking a moment to read a book, drawing a bath, or taking a walk outside.

Q: Any words of wisdom for all the women out there looking to take a leap of faith when it comes to their career?

Find a mentor and learn everything you can about the industry.  Also, focus on the people you want to help – their experience and journey.

Q: What’s next for LATHER?

Right now I am most excited about a special product we will be launching for our 20th anniversary. We’re surprising our top fans with it this fall. Stay tuned, it’s still a secret, shhh

Not Too Cheesy: Vegan "Cheese" Recipes That Taste Like The Real Thing

Recipes
Food
Nutrition

We all love cheese. And if you don’t love cheese, well, you just haven’t found the right kind for you. If you’re unlucky like me, however, cheese does not like you. Thankfully, we live in 2020, where plant-based cheese recipes are alive and well.

I have been dairy-free for a few years, and cheese is truly the food group I miss the most. As much as we try, we sometimes just can’t get vegan cheese to taste like the real thing. So, I recruited my dairy-loving, cow-consuming friends to be my taste-testers. Their brutal honesty helped me create some “fake” cheese that can actually compete with the real stuff.

Goat "Cheese" Ball

Did you know you can make mouth-watering “fake” cheese with macadamia nuts? Yes, macadamia nuts. If you’re craving that creamy consistency but your stomach isn’t down for dairy, try out this recipe inspired by Simple Vegan Blog

Nacho "Cheese" Sauce

I know what you’re thinking: is this real? Is it too good to be true? No nuts, no fat, and it tastes good? You’re in for a treat. No one can tell the difference between this recipe and their favorite gooey cheese sauce. This recipe makes a lot of sauce, so be ready to share and shock your dairy-loving friends.
