4 Ways Pets Can Improve Your Wellness

Personal Growth
Fitness

There’s nothing quite like coming home from a stressful day at work to a majorly excited dog or cat who unconditionally loves you. More than much-appreciated companionship, did you know your four-legged friend can elevate your wellness?

Whether it’s extra *walkies* getting you up and moving outside, or the stress relief of having your best friend nearby, here’s a few ways owning a pet can improve your physical and emotional health.

You’ll get more exercise.

Exercise isn’t always at the gym. Whether it’s running around at the park, hiking, or just taking a walk, you can really step up your fitness with Fido! Dog owners are 54% more likely to stay active than those in a floof-free home, studies show

It reduces stress and anxiety.

Feeling overwhelmed? Sometimes just the boop of a snoot can do wonders for not just everyday stress but anxiety and depression.

“One of the major signs of depression is the feeling that life has no value,” says Susan Levy, an internist and geriatrician. “When you’re responsible for another living thing, it gives you value, which is key to breaking out and preventing depression.”

It can help your heart.

Sometimes your pet can be *so* cute your heart just can’t take it, but also turns out being a dog or cat owner can actually make it stronger. Not only does going on regular walks potentially help reduce your risk of heart disease, but sitting and giving lots of pets can lower blood pressure

You’ll socialize more.

If you want to get out more, your pup is the perfect icebreaker. Grab your pet’s leash and walk down to the new dog-friendly brewery in your neighborhood, or stop to chat with the fellow dog moms and dads on your evening walk. You and your dog will have new friends; it’s a win-win.

Not Too Cheesy: Vegan "Cheese" Recipes That Taste Like The Real Thing

Recipes
Food
Nutrition

We all love cheese. And if you don’t love cheese, well, you just haven’t found the right kind for you. If you’re unlucky like me, however, cheese does not like you. Thankfully, we live in 2020, where plant-based cheese recipes are alive and well.

I have been dairy-free for a few years, and cheese is truly the food group I miss the most. As much as we try, we sometimes just can’t get vegan cheese to taste like the real thing. So, I recruited my dairy-loving, cow-consuming friends to be my taste-testers. Their brutal honesty helped me create some “fake” cheese that can actually compete with the real stuff.

Goat "Cheese" Ball

Did you know you can make mouth-watering “fake” cheese with macadamia nuts? Yes, macadamia nuts. If you’re craving that creamy consistency but your stomach isn’t down for dairy, try out this recipe inspired by Simple Vegan Blog

Nacho "Cheese" Sauce

I know what you’re thinking: is this real? Is it too good to be true? No nuts, no fat, and it tastes good? You’re in for a treat. No one can tell the difference between this recipe and their favorite gooey cheese sauce. This recipe makes a lot of sauce, so be ready to share and shock your dairy-loving friends.
