Welcome to San Diego.
Whether you live in America’s Finest City, visit it from time to time, or have it on your bucket list to see one day, this coastal paradise can't be beat (okay, we're a little biased because one of our offices is here... but still). Whatever the case, you’ve probably heard that San Diego is where it’s at if you’re looking for some of the best yoga classes and studios on the planet.
Yoga is among the trendiest, most popular workouts in San Diego. People do it in the sky, on the beach, at breweries, out on the open water... If you want a taste of that San Diego yoga culture, you’ve come to the right place.
These are the top 10 yoga studios in San Diego (based on number of great reviews for in-person and virtual):
If you’re an SD local—and maybe even if you’re not—you’ve probably heard of Trilogy Sanctuary. This aerial yoga studio/vegan café/gorgeous boutique is a San Diego yogi paradise (or I guess I should say sanctuary). Enjoy your practice on the rooftop with a view of the beautiful ocean in La Jolla and finish off with some avocado toast, vega-nachos, or a superfood smoothie bowl and tell me you haven’t discovered pure bliss. While you’re at it, browse around in the boutique for some sustainable clothing, home and self-care goods, or crystal jewelry for the complete Zen experience.
If the name didn’t intrigue you enough, the welcoming environment and warm energy of this San Diego studio will. With locations in North Park and Normal Heights, Pilgrimage of the Heart was founded by the owner of the oldest vegetarian restaurant in San Diego. It began as a small gift shop and has transformed over the past 21 years into the beautiful yoga community it is today. With everything from live music, to sound baths, to sacred cacao ceremonies, it’s more than a yoga studio. And now, you can check them out virtually!
If you’re looking for a clean, trendy downtown studio, honey, you found it. With its crisp white walls, floor to ceiling windows, tons of natural light, and brightly colored props, Honey Yoga is the place to go in Downtown San Diego. Its founders and instructors emphasize that everyone is welcome, and that “pajamas are yoga pants, too.” They even have a weekly class for BIPOC led by Digital Strategist/Art Historian/Black History Historian/Yoga Teacher, Camille Bethune-Brown as a “space for solidarity and healing for those identifying as persons of color to improve their physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing.” And yes, it’s virtual.
If you're a parent, you understand the struggles of balancing parenthood and fitness. Founded by a busy mom struggling to prioritize her wellness after the birth of her first child, Hapa Yoga in Grantville offers a place for moms and kids alike to make time for their practice. They offer childcare to get you back on your mat, and kids’ yoga by age group from toddlers to twelve-year-olds, so your child can enjoy it, too. And if your little one isn’t quite here yet, they offer prenatal yoga as well!
Want to heat things up a bit? Jump into the Yoga Box. This trendy studio offers hot Power Flow and Sculpt classes as well as non-heated Recovery, all with color-changing lights and surround sound music to set the mood. They have locations in Pacific Beach, Hillcrest, Ocean Beach, and North Park, so odds are, you can find one near you if you’re in the area. After a class at Yoga Box, you’ll leave your practice feeling energized, empowered, and connected to the Yoga Box instructors, students, and community.
If you’re looking for a yoga studio that can help you in many areas of your wellness journey, check out Wellness Lounge in Kearny Mesa. They offer chiropractic services, massage, acupuncture, lash extensions, facial/skincare, and naturopathic medicine. Talk about the full package. On top of that, they have yoga classes, retreats, private sessions, and even paddleboard yoga on Mission Bay! Meet your new one-stop shop.
Located in the heart of downtown, The Little Yoga Studio is just that—a quaint little studio on the corner of Eighth and Ash. They emphasize yoga as a healing method, and the instructors want to create personalized experiences for all who enter through smaller class sizes. They offer classes for all levels as well as workshops, community gatherings, and wellness retreats so you can dive deeper into your journey. Plus, if you’re new, you can get two weeks of unlimited yoga for just $35. Sign us up!
In an always-sunny city like San Diego, of course there’s going to be multiple gorgeous outdoor aerial yoga studios. Elka Yoga and Wellness is an “educational sanctuary” for instructors and students to learn about themselves and live healthier, happier lives both on and off the mat. They offer not only mat and aerial yoga, but massage, life coaching, Reiki healing, hypnotherapy, cupping, nutrition consulting, flow systems auditing, and more. Pretty much anything you could want to help guide you to living your most balanced life. (And right now, they’re offering many of these services in-home).
Want to raise your energetic frequency? Sojourn Healing Collective is here to help you heal yourself both emotionally and physically, offering workshops to become the highest version of yourself as well as yoga and meditation classes, healing sessions, and breathwork. They call themselves an “urban oasis nestled in the community of Golden Hill,” and with a name meaning “temporary stay,” how can you not feel welcome?
If you couldn’t figure it out from the name, Riffs is known for their live music and beautiful outdoor yoga deck, bringing Bali to Bird Rock. Just two blocks from the beach, the studio is the perfect place to enjoy beautiful music and feel the salty ocean air as you flow. (Then, enjoy some great Mexican food at Don Bravo next door after class, you won’t regret it). Plus, they have a second location with a large indoor space in Ocean Beach!
So, if you ever find yourself in sunny San Diego, or if you want a taste of the beachy yoga vibes from afar, book a class at one of these studios (or any others, they're all great) in-person or online! Because when it comes to empowering, healing, yoga communities, all are welcome, and the more the merrier.
That’s something I never expected to hear. Think about it: we join gyms and studios because of their equipment, instructors, space, community (and AC, of course). But who’s to say we can’t get all that—or at least most of it—with virtual and online classes, too? In this new wave of wellness, we’re all switching up our fitness routines as we switch up our everyday schedules and habits. It’s not just in-studio or at-home anymore. It’s in-studio, at-home, at the park, beach, parking lot, rooftop...virtual, hybrid, Instagram Live, online, on-demand, and so much more. As we’re adapting, adjusting, finding our groove, etc., online gym memberships enter the fray. Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?
There are tons of benefits to an online gym membership, especially right now.
Let’s break this down:
1. Scheduling convenience
A virtual/online gym fitness membership is a monthly subscription that gives you access to tons of live stream fitness classes you can take anywhere, from studios across the globe. These fitness studios offer tons of at-home workouts, group exercise, and one-on-one training sessions to choose from, no matter your exercise program or fitness level. With so many options, it’s easy to find one that fits your schedule. Whether you want to fit in a morning flow before work, combat that afternoon slump with some cardio, squeeze in some strength training before dinner, or wind down with an evening barre class, you can pick and choose classes to fit your fitness routine.
2. Minimizing exposure to COVID-19
And because they’re online, you can take these classes from the comfort of your home (or wherever you are), thus minimizing your exposure to COVID-19 and eliminating your commute to the gym or studio. By now, many of us have our designated “workout spot,” whether it’s an actual weight room, a quick scooch of the coffee table, or a grassy area in the backyard. Maybe you’re comfortable here... maybe you’ve even learned to love it.
With an online gym membership, you can stay in your safe space/comfy workout spot. Or, you can go somewhere new (local park, beach spot, a different area of the house, you know). You can access these virtual, live stream fitness classes from any device, so you can prop up your phone, laptop, or tablet wherever you want to go, or roll out your mat in front of the big screen TV in your living room.
We all have our favorite, go-to workouts. But sometimes, it feels good to switch it up (especially right now). Working from home all day, many of us are craving some variety and excitement, and an online gym membership can definitely help with that. According to our recent poll about COVID’s effect on our fitness routines, 64% of you have tried new online workouts since the start of the pandemic—I know I have. Maybe it’s because trying new things is easier in the comfort of our homes, maybe we’re finally able to try some classes we normally can’t find locally, or maybe we’re all just bored out of our minds...I don’t know. But I’m excited about it.
With an online gym membership, you can get that spice you’re looking for easily. Start out your Monday by hitting some HIIT, ease your sore muscles with some Restorative Yoga, and end the week with some dance cardio to pretend you’re at the club. The world is yours.
4. Working out without a commute
My favorite part? No commute. There are literally no more excuses when it comes to skipping workouts. No traffic, no schedule conflicts, no fear of returning to the studio. You don’t even have to worry about packing a gym bag with a change of clothes and shower supplies or prepping a snack or protein shake to bring to work. Just shut your computer, throw on some leggings, and get to work.
Community—the element of online fitness memberships we don’t often think of. When we go into studios, we understand the beauty of a fitness community. We’re greeted by our instructors, we chat with others in the class, and we all sweat together and encourage each other throughout. But working out at home is different... or is it?
We can do workouts on our own at home all we want, but we’re definitely going to miss out on the community aspect we all know and love. But, with live stream classes, we can create a different kind of community. The beauty of it? It’s not just your neighbors anymore. Anyone with an online fitness membership can join these classes, regardless of where they’re located in relation to the studio, so you can be working out alongside people from all over the world—now that’s something I can get behind.
