Spinning Out While Shutting In: Why Now is the Perfect Time to Try Virtual Cycling Classes

Renewal
Virtual Classes
Cycling

All around the world, in millions of houses, billions of long-ignored to-dos are suddenly getting some love now that everyone’s trying to wait out COVID at home.

Those dressers that had been disorganized since they first held your drawers?

Sorted on day two.

The yucky grey glop formerly known as crispy green broccoli lurking in the crisper?

Evicted from its flophouse on the bad side of the fridge.

That cycling class you’d meant to try way back in the days when you could go places and do stuff and the world wasn’t ending?

Wait, you’ve never taken a cycling class?

Seriously? It’s literally never been easier to do from home.

The (sudden) shift to virtual spin workouts

For one thing, it’s literally only been possible for a little while, and there hasn’t been much variety to the offerings. That’s changing now, especially with so many studios starting to offer virtual classes on Mindbody.

Even better, there’s no room full of strangers at home to judge if you fall down your first time up on the bike—just rooms full of (possibly strange, probably bored) family members.

One place where rookie riders can run into difficulty is with the special cleats people wear in spin studios. “If you’ve never used clip-in cleats, it’s great to get comfortable with them at home before trying them in class,” says Libby Acquafresca, an instructor at Cycletribe cycling studio.

If you already have a bike of your own, all you really need to purchase is something called a bike trainer. It holds your bike in place but offers resistance to the rear wheel as if you were riding on the free road.

(If you’ve never played around with a bike trainer, it might be worth setting up a video consultation with your local bike shop. Lots of them are still open, even if it’s only for service calls and contactless sales, like Foothill Cyclery in San Luis Obispo, California.)

Don’t have a bicycle of your own? A smart option is to rent a spin bike locally. Since most spin studios can’t hold classes in person, some are renting out their equipment—an arrangement where everybody wins in the interim until the pandemic passes.

Equipment setup is key

Once you have the equipment you need, the most important thing is to make sure it’s set up the right way.

“Bike setup is key,” says Libby, the Cycletribe instructor. In fact, she says, people riding at home have a certain setup advantage. “A lot of times people don’t show up to class with enough time to set up—or even learn how to setup.”

She recommends new riders “try out different seat and handlebar heights to find their perfect match,” something they can do at their own pace without the pressure of class start time looming. To get the seat dialed in, Libby suggests you “stand next to the seat. Hip height is a good place to start.”

All that’s left at that point is the easiest part: browse virtual cycling classes on Mindbody!

Under the worst-case scenario...

If you try a couple classes that you don’t enjoy, you still have a perfectly good exercise bike. Plus, with everyone adjusting to life with COVID, more and more fitness studios are moving online to stay open. Even if cycling isn’t for you, you’re sure to find something else you love.

Under the best-case scenario...

You find another healthy hobby you love—AND you return to society with quads and glutes strong enough to crack walnuts.

Not only that, once the world opens up again and you’re able to try out your first live class, you’ll already be a grizzled veteran.

“The experience would be almost the same working out at home,” even if you lose the feeling of being among your teammates,” Libby says. She points out that by starting out at home, you can “work on certain moves we do a lot in class, like tap backs, handlebar presses, and figure 8's.”

Unlocking Your Mindbody: How to Use Your Mindbody App to Find a New Workout

The last few months have posed quite the challenge for fitness junkies all over the world. What used to be as simple as waking up early to go to your favorite sunrise yoga class or hitting the gym after work to maintain physical fitness has unfortunately come to an abrupt halt. For most of us, our fitness routines have been put to the test as we learn to embrace this “new normal” of WOFH (working out from home).

Even though COVID-19 has forced us to change up how we get a sweat sesh in, we’ve also been presented with a great opportunity to redefine the way we commit to our wellness routines. Luckily, the simplicity modern technology affords us these days gives us a ton of options to stay fit and healthy right in the comfort of our own homes.

Here’s how you can use the Mindbody app to freshen up your workouts:

Take a class from anywhere in the world—literally

While you may be missing out on the in-studio experience (trust me, I get it!), the Mindbody app enables you to take a class from any studio, no matter the distance. Whether you’re fixing to keep it local and check out places within your area or interested in a virtual workout 500 miles away, your options are endless. With 91% of group fitness studios making their classes available through live stream or video-on-demand, you can work out at any studio of your choosing.

Finding a virtual class in your area or in another city is simple with the Mindbody app. Simply log into the app and access virtual classes directly from the home screen.

Search Anywhere

Whether you’re fixing to keep it local or interested in a virtual workout 500 miles away, your options are endless.

Try that one class you’ve been meaning to check out

With virtual classes dominating the workout scene right now, you have more access to different types of fitness classes than ever before. Maybe you live in a town where certain workouts aren’t available quite yet—or maybe you tend to be “set in your old ways” when it comes to your fitness choices and you never can get around to trying something new. I’ll be the first to admit there are certain classes I may have avoided in the past (I'm looking at you, HIIT) because I’m more of a yoga fan and enjoy being able to go at my own pace and take breaks when I need to.

We all get in our own head when we’re experiencing something for the first time—especially when it comes to a workout class. However, being in the privacy of your own home, you have the luxury of setting your own pace and taking rest/water breaks when you need to. Plus, tons of studios have Intro Offers for new clients, so you can try out new studios and classes for less.

Connect with new studios and teachers near and far

You know what they say—variety is the spice of life. Well, the same can be said about your workout routine. If you’re looking for another way to mix up your fitness journey, try taking a class from a different studio or teacher than you normally would. Not sure if you’ll vibe with a certain studio or teacher? No problem. You can learn about a studio and get to know their teachers all within the Mindbody app.

Here’s a fun tip: Are your virtual game nights or weekly House Party check-ins with friends getting stale? A fun way I’ve been staying connected with friends during quarantine is by jumping into classes my friends have on their weekly rotation—whether they live in another state or just down the street.

Even though the in-studio experience feels like an activity of the distant past, the Mindbody app makes it easy to stick to your fitness goals, stay sane, and support your favorite studios, too. With the ability to browse and book virtual classes anywhere, anytime, you can find the right workout for you whenever you need it. And let’s be honest, a good sweat is something we all REALLY need right now.
