5 Halloween-Themed Fitness Moves for a Killer Workout

It’s that time of year again! Ghosts, ghouls, goblet squats, oh my! Are you ready for a little Halloween fitness fun? We’ve got five spooktacular workout moves to get you into the haunted holiday spirit.

1. Single Leg Dead Lifts

Don’t let the name scare you! This workout move focuses on strength, stability and, balance. Maintain a flat back, keep your core engaged, and keep your weight evenly distributed on your planted leg. As you raise one leg straight behind you, keep your toes pointed and bend forward, hinging at the hips. Return to standing using the hamstring of your planted leg. Try adding a kettlebell for an extra challenge.

2. Wood Chops

This “ax-cellent” move targets abs, hips, and shoulders. First, grab a five- to 10-pound medicine ball. Start with feet slightly wider than hip distance and keep knees slightly bent. Raise medicine ball to your left shoulder and as you exhale, pull abs to spine, and make the motion of “chopping’ the medicine ball diagonally toward your right knee. Engage your core as you rotate. Return to starting position and repeat on both sides.

3. Spiderman Pushup

It’s time to dust off those cobwebs and try this creepy crawly upper-body exercise. Start in a standard high-plank pushup position, aligning your body from ankles to head. As you lower your body towards the floor, lift your right foot and swing your right leg out in a sideways position. Try to touch your knee to your elbow. Return to starting position and repeat on left side.

4. Dead Bug

No hocus pocus here! This ground-based strength exercise works abs, obliques, back, shoulders, and hips. Start by lying flat on your back with your knees bent at 90 degrees. Point your arms towards the sky and flatten your back against the floor. As you exhale, engage your core, lower one leg and the opposing arm until they are hovering above the ground. Return to the starting position, and repeat with the opposite side.

5. Superman

Tap into your Halloween superhero spirit with this exercise. Lie face down on the ground with your arms and legs extended. Keep your neck neutral and your core as still as possible. Simultaneously raise the arms and legs inches off the ground to form a small curve in the body. Hold for a few seconds and lower back to the ground.

Goat "Cheese" Ball

Did you know you can make mouth-watering “fake” cheese with macadamia nuts? Yes, macadamia nuts. If you’re craving that creamy consistency but your stomach isn’t down for dairy, try out this recipe inspired by Simple Vegan Blog

Ingredients
  • 1 cup of macadamia nuts (soaked overnight)
  • 1 1/2 lemon 
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 tsp raw virgin olive oil
  • ¾ cup water
  • 1 tbsp rosemary
  • 1 tablespoon pink Himalayan salt 
Directions
  • Place the macadamia nuts into a bowl and cover with water to soak for at least 7 hours. 
  • Drain and wash macadamia nuts before placing it in a high-speed blender (I use my refurbished Vitamix). 
  • Add lemon juice, garlic cloves, olive oil, water, and blend for about two minutes until extremely thick.
  • Slowly add in the lemon juice, followed by rosemary, salt, and any additional seasoning that you desire.
  • In a large bowl, lay out a cheesecloth that will hold the macadamia mixture. Make sure your cheesecloth is large enough to hold the entire mixture. It will be very thick, so scoop it from the blender into the cloth that is within the bowl.
  • Once in the cloth, in the bowl, wrap the mixture up in the cloth into a ball. With an elastic band, tie the top so the mixture is in a tight bowl. It should be a large softball size.
  • Squeeze out any extra liquid and place the cheese ball in the fridge for at least 14 hours(I left mine for about 24 hours, and it was perfect). 
  • When you are ready to bake this bad boy, preheat the oven to 175°C/350°F.
  • Grease a baking pan with olive oil, well. Don’t make my mistakebe sure to put enough oil! 
  • Carefully unwrap the cheese ball from the cloth and shape into a perfect round ball.
  • Place on the very greased pan and bake for 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown. However, check it about halfway. You may need to turn down the oven for the final 20 minutes. If your cheese is cracking while golden brown, that is perfect! 

Once taken out of the oven, it’s ready to serve. It will be difficult to transfer – so if you can decorate the pan and serve directly on it with crackers and veggies that’s what I recommend.
